WHAt we believe
"Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus." —2 Timothy 1:13
Providence Baptist Church is committed to the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation which can best be summarized by the five reformation sola’s. Providence is also committed to the 1689 London Baptist Confession.
Scripture Alone The Bible is our only authority for faith and practice. Grace Alone Salvation is a free gift of God's unmerited favor and can in no way be earned. Faith Alone We are justified (declared righteous by God) by faith alone. Christ Alone Jesus Christ is the only Savior and Lord, and only way for man to be made right with God. Glory to God Alone All the glory belongs to God for our salvation since it is His sovereign will and action that brought it into being. |
1689 Second London baptist confession
This historic document (found here) is the best confessional description of the truths we believe the Bible teaches. The representatives of 7 congregations in London gathered to summarize their common confessional beliefs, and to distinguish themselves from the Anabaptists and the Arminians in 1644. This was one of the first of several non-Anglican groups in that century to put a confession of their faith forward for the world to see. Two years later, the Westminster Assembly would produce its own confession (Westminster Confession of Faith), and then in 1658, the Congregationalists would follow suit (Savoy Declaration). To show their solidarity and theological agreement in many areas of doctrine with the Presbyterians and Congregationalists, the Baptists of London drafted the 1677 Baptist Confession with significant reliance on the Westminster and Savoy. Because of the threat of persecution they would not publish the document until 1689, giving it the name that it is known by today, The Second London Baptist Confession of Faith.
In 1855 the young pastor at the New Park Street Chapel, Charles H. Spurgeon, published a new edition of the Confession and in doing so wrote, This little volume is not issued as an authoritative rule, or code of faith, whereby you are to be fettered, but as an assistance to you in controversy, a confirmation in faith, and a means of edification in righteousness. Here the younger members of our church will have a body of divinity in small compass, and by means of the Scriptural proofs, will be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in them.
Be not ashamed of your faith; remember it is the ancient gospel of martyrs, confessors, reformers and saints. Above all, it is the truth of God, against which the gates of Hell cannot prevail. Let your lives adorn your faith, let your example adorn your creed. Above all live in Christ Jesus, and walk in Him, giving credence to no teaching but that which is manifestly approved of Him, and owned by the Holy Spirit. Cleave fast to the Word of God which is here mapped out for you."
The practical result of these beliefs is that we take the Bible seriously and seek with our all to live lives that are pleasing and honoring to God. We welcome you to contact us for a personal copy of the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith.

Providence Baptist Church exists to glorify God. We glorify God by worshiping Him as the Triune Creator, praying together to Him as the provider of all our needs, fellowshipping together as His children, discipling ourselves in His Word, serving each other and the world as the light and salt of the earth, giving to move the work of His kingdom forward, and by evangelizing the community we live in and sending others to evangelize and plant churches in other communities.
